Activities

Avochie is a fantastic base for fishing and other sporting activities and excursions, or for just relaxing away from the world. From the heather-glad mountains of the Cairngorms to the beaches of Banff & Buchan, Aberdeenshire is full of romantic castles, impressive wildlife, world-class golf courses, and endless whisky distilleries.

Around Avochie

You do not need to go far to find things to do: the estate has excellent paths for walking and running, and secluded locations to set up camp.

Shooting & stalking

Avochie is a traditional sporting estate, with rough shooting, duck flighting, and roe stalking.  Clay pigeon shooting can also be organised.

About an hour south into the Cairngorms, is Avochie's sister estate, Candacraig, which is managed for driven and walked up grouse shooting. Days are available on request.

Around Aberdeenshire

Fifteen minutes' drive from Avochie are Huntly Falconry Centre, and imposing Huntly Castle (part of the much-celebrated Aberdeenshire Castle Trail).  The Lonach Gathering - always the last Saturday of August - takes place forty-five minutes south, in Strathdon.

Avochie is in prime whisky country, and tours and tastings can be found at nearby Glendronach as well as at The Balvenie and Glenfiddich distilleries in Dufftown.

Sunnyside Beach, by Findlater Castle, is our recommendation for a day out at the seaside. Wildlife watching and sea fishing boat trips are also available, and even surfing at Sand End.  The Banffshire coast has many charming old harbours, including Portsoy, which hosts a boat festival in June/July, and Cullen, the home of Cullen skink.

For golf, we recommend Huntly Golf Club, just fifteen minutes up the river, or Duff House Royal.  Visit Scotland has a wealth of information on other courses in the area.
